SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Basics

Many of you wonder aloud: "what are the basics of SEO?" In this brief article, the high level features will be discussed. A lot of small business owners have a web site. Many times they drive traffic to the site through direct marketing. But...what about organic search on Google? In other words, how can you ensure prospective customers (who know absolutely nothing about your website) can query a search engine and find your website in the search results?

If you have a web site, you can to to the live page and right click on the page in your favorite browser. For this exercise, we will pick perryex.com as seen below:

When we right click on this page (anywhere on the page), we must select the submenu "View Source". Then we will see HTML code as seen below. Look for the Head tag. You will see meta tags. You can copy them as I have and paste them into a Microsoft editor. We suggest Notepad or downloading Notepad ++.

<META content="Perry Excavating: Excavators in Martin county (Camby/Mooresville), Indiana" dir="LTR" lang="en" name="title">

<META content="Indiana, Mooresville, Camby, Culy Contracting, TSW Utility Solutions Oles Engineering Corporation, excavating, excavation, culy contracting, tsw utility solutions, oles engineering corporation, water main, installation, emergency work, design consultation, leak detection, testing, water main testing, hydra-stop, hydro stop, hydrostop, hydrastop, hydra-stop.com, licensed septic installer in Martin county, finger systems, tanks, lift stations, sanitary sewers, perryex.com, perry excavating, perry excavators" dir="LTR" lang="en" name="keywords">

<META content="Perry Excavating, established in 1988 is a minority-owned business enterprise, specializing in core excavation services for site construction, water, and sewer" dir="LTR" lang="en" name="description">

The above code snippets bracketed with open and closed carets (< - opening > - closing) describe a title, keywords, and a description. When we programmatically feed these Meta tags into a search engine, a natural search can occur, thereby allowing visitors of Google to feed words into the search input box and potentially find an excavator in Indiana. These tags can be manually inserted, or they can be added in any CMS (Content Management System) you may be using. CMS systems while they have a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) interface where code is "behind-the-scenes" are more restrictive, however, you can always utilize Titles, Subtitles, and text searches initiated by a "electronic robots crawl" to accentuate your key words being added to the search engine. This feature, requesting an electronic robots crawl from Google, will be discussed in an upcoming article on this blog. TITLE

The title appears in the very top of the web browser. It is important in web searches because the search engines rank the title words very high. Consider the name of your business, key products or services you provide, and the territory within which you operate.

THE DESCRIPTION

We typically advise customers to come up with a 255 character description of their business, including spaces and punctuation. In this way, your text will not be cut off when your site is returned in a search on Google, for instances.

KEYWORDS Think of words such as the brand names of products or services you provide for your keywords. In addition, the geographic territory, to include city, county, and state. If you wish, you can also include the names of your competitors. Finally, include misspellings of your business, especially if your business name is hard to spell.

After these items are crafted, you can insert these into your home page within the header tag as follows: <HTML>

<HEAD>

<META content="Perry Excavating: Excavators in Martin county (Camby/Mooresville), Indiana" dir="LTR" lang="en" name="title">

<META content="Indiana, Mooresville, Camby, Culy Contracting, TSW Utility Solutions Oles Engineering Corporation, excavating, excavation, culy contracting, tsw utility solutions, oles engineering corporation, water main, installation, emergency work, design consultation, leak detection, testing, water main testing, hydra-stop, hydro stop, hydrostop, hydrastop, hydra-stop.com, licensed septic installer in Martin county, finger systems, tanks, lift stations, sanitary sewers, perryex.com, perry excavating, perry excavators" dir="LTR" lang="en" name="keywords">

<META content="Perry Excavating, established in 1988 is a minority-owned business enterprise, specializing in core excavation services for site construction, water, and sewer" dir="LTR" lang="en" name="description">
